![]() Put more plainly, Nintendo really knows how to make a fabulously fun run-to-the-right game. Thing is, it injects so much dopamine into my little monkey brain that any intellectual qualms I may have are effectively quashed as long as a controller is in my hands. It’s the Flower Kingdom that’s under siege by the disenfranchised monster masses rather than the Mushroom Kingdom, and a few servant class characters have been charitably elevated to heroes, but the themes of class struggle are the same. The latest of these games, Super Mario Bros. And they typically end with Mario and his aristocratic friends as the victors, having subdued the rebellion and sent Bowser and his minions back underground. Most Mario games begin with Bowser, king of the have-nots, rising up and attempting to take something he covets (like the beautiful Princess Peach). Beneath their feet are sewers and dungeons populated by the disenfranchised - goombas and koopa troopas - who see Mario as a symbol of their repression.
